In the January 2015 article, "Beware Of Fradulent IRS Telephone Scam," we warned doctors about a rapidly growing, sophisticated IRS telephone scam. Scammers, pretending to be IRS agents, were calling taxpayers telling them that they were liable for back taxes, which must be paid immediately through either a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the intended victim refused to immediately cooperate, the caller became hostile and insulting, and threatened them with arrest, deportation, or suspension of his business or driver's license.
The scammers were actually operating out of a rogue call center in India, using fictitious common names and IRS badge numbers to appear legitimate. Furthermore, they spoofed the IRS toll-free number on victims’ caller ID to make it appear…
