Doctors enjoyed an explosive bull market from 2019-2021. The S&P 500 skyrocketed to a 31.4% gain, including dividends, in 2019. After cratering more than 30% at the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic in March of 2020, the S&P 500 snapped back against all odds to record an amazing 18.4% gain, including dividends, by year-end. Furthermore, the S&P 500 registered another impressive gain of 30.92% in 2021, including dividends. Record government spending (and deficits) to offset the economic effects of COVID-19, and the Federal Reserve’s ultra-low interest rate policies were largely responsible for these outsized gains.
2022 has been an entirely different story. The Federal Reserve is attempting to slam the brakes on inflation, currently running at an annual rate of over 8%, by aggressively hiking interest rates and plans to continue doing so for the remainder of the year.
