After graduating from law and MBA school in 1983, I began consulting with dental practices across the country on their tax and business planning matters. After carefully evaluating different business models (solo versus group practice), I quickly understood the significant advantages that group practices could offer.
Advantages of Group Practice
Employing two or more doctors allows expanded hours and days for the practice, providing increased convenience for patients. Also, through operating five days a week the practice could achieve better facility and staff utilization, lowering overhead. Further, the practice could expand the scope of services offered and capture referrals previously sent out. Group practice also provides better emergency coverage and vacation options for their doctor-employees. Finally, the more flexible work schedules available are very attractive to potential new doctors.
